The Philadelphia Flyers have placed both R.J. Umberger and Mark Streit on injured reserve, the team announced on Saturday.
In corresponding moves, the team has recalled defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and left wing Taylor Leier to the NHL. The 22-year-old Gostisbehere made his NHL debut last season, playing two games for the Flyers. He currently ranks third among all AHL defenseman with 10 points (2-8—10).
Leier, a 4th round pick in the 2012 draft, has scored four goals and five assists through 14 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL this season. Leier will make his NHL debut on Saturday, with multiple sources reporting that Brayden Schenn will be a healthy scratch against Carolina Hurricanes.
Head coach Dave Hakstol said of Schenn’s scratch, “He’s just out for the night.”
Streit, who ranks second in ice time on the team and has nine points in 16 games, will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a pubic plate detachment. With the Flyers pressed up against the salary cap, they immediately added Streit to long-term injured reserve to gain the cap relief that can offer. Streit is expected to miss about six weeks with an injury that sounds very terrible, though I’m not entirely sure what it is and choose not to Google it.
