One of the most sought after goaltending properties this summer is the Rangers’ 27-year-old netminder Cam Talbot.
Glen Sather is fielding calls on Talbot, who had a very good season, filling in and keeping the Rangers in competition while Henrik Lundqvist was out of the lineup. While he’s not the only goaltender rumored to be available via trade, many teams are interested with the Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and San Jose Sharks are all believed to have expressed interest.
On Monday, TSN’s Darren Dreger told an Edmonton radio station that the Rangers have turned down an offer of two 2nd round picks for Talbot.
I’m told that there was a team that offered two 2nd round picks for Cam Talbot and that didn’t close the deal. So Sather and Jeff Gorton and management types of the New York Rangers are still on a bit of a fishing expedition.
Two 2nd round draft picks seems like a pretty generous offer for a goaltender who has played just 57 career games, even with an impressive 93.53% even strength AdSv% through 36 games last season.
Maybe Sather is playing hard-to-get and will come back to an offer like this, but this may be one of the first indicators of what the market is like in advance of the 2015 draft. Or maybe he’s just trying to recover a first round pick after trading away the team’s first round pick for the next two drafts.
