The New York Riveters have struck first during free agency, signing Connecticut Whale defenseman Kaleigh Fratkin and goaltender Jamie Leonoff, the team announced Sunday. Fratkin earns a one-year $19,500 deal, and Leonoff gets a one-year $10,000 deal.
Fratkin posted 17 points (5-12-17) in 18 games, leading all NWHL defensemen in points and ranking seventh overall.
Her move to the Riveters gives New York a strong base for their blue line group heading into the season with captain Ashley Johnston and Kiira Dosdall already re-signed. She’s one of the first moves showing what the team will do to pull themselves out of the league’s basement.
“I decided to sign with the Riveters because they offered me an opportunity that I thought would be the best fit for me,” said Fratkin. “I am beyond excited to be a part of the Riveters organization and look forward to chasing the Isobel Cup.”
Leonoff played 10 games for the Whale, posted a .936 save percentage and a 7-3-0 record.
“I’m really happy to be a part of the Riveters organization,” said Leonoff. “I have heard amazing things about the staff and the coaches, and I am looking forward to competing with a top team this season.”
The NWHL free agency period opened Sunday, May 1.
