Last Friday, the Ryerson University men’s hockey team of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) team hired Kori Cheverie to be a full-time assistant. Cheverie’s hiring is historic, she becomes the first woman to be hired as a full-time assistant coach of a men’s CIS team.
Prior to becoming an assistant coach, Cheverie was a Skate Training Specialist at Ryerson and developed a working relationship with many of the Rams players.
Ryerson University is very excited to have Cheverie as a member of their coaching staff.
“Our men’s hockey program has made significant strides in their performance in the last several years,” Director of Athletics, Dr. Ivan Joseph said in a release.
The Rams have been in the process of making some personnel changes to their coaching staff. In June, head coach Graham Wise retired and associate head coach Johnny Duco was promoted to interim head coach. Cheverie brings a wealth of playing experience to the Rams bench.
Cheverie played six seasons in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League as a member of the Toronto Furies. The New Glasgow native played in 152 games as a forward, scoring 37 goals and 82 points, she was also a plus-11. Cheverie played her collegiate hockey at St. Mary’s University Huskies in Halifax, Canada, and was a three-time All-Star and an Academic All-Canadian. Cheverie was also a two-time St. Mary’s Female Athlete of the Year.
“The addition of coach Kori to our coaching staff will provide much-needed support to continue the momentum as we build towards a national championship program,” “We are very excited to add Kori to our coaching staff as she brings great experience, energy, and commitment to our hockey program and will continue to add value to our department as a whole,” interim head coach, Johnny Duco in a press release.
