The St. Louis Blues have given speedy forward Magnus Paajarvi a one-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. Though the team did not disclose terms, it’s reported to be a one-way agreement carrying a value of $700,000.
Paajarvi has had a difficult time putting himself into regular NHL time since being traded from the Edmonton Oilers in the summer of 2013 as a part of the deal that brought David Perron to Edmonton.
Last season, Paajarvi played 48 games with the Blues, scoring three goals and nine points. There were stretches where he appeared to be regaining the touch he had in his rookie season, when he scored 15 goals and 34 points for the Oilers. However, those stretches didn’t last long enough for him to become a roster staple. He found his way into just three postseason matches.
Last season’s production was a step up from the season prior when he only saw 10 games of NHL action and recorded just a single assist. His struggles that season saw the Blues waive him. The 10th overall draft pick in the 2009 draft went unclaimed.
Nonetheless, the 25-year-old Paajarvi provides the team with very reasonably priced depth who can push play in the right direction. Since the 2012-13 season, Paajarvi has a 1.44% adjusted CF%Rel.
