There’s no denying that Buffalo Sabres play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret is one of the best to call the game of hockey.
He’s been a staple of the organization since its inception in 1970, and continues to be the voice Sabres fans listen to for most of the games during the year. On Saturday afternoon, Jeanneret was able to do something that he hadn’t been able to do all year long, call an overtime goal scored by Jack Eichel.
During Saturday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Sabres toyed with an “RJ Cam” on television that gave fans a look at Jeanneret in action throughout the game. The camera always seemed to try catch him at the right moment, and it finally did at the very last possible second.
With overtime winding down, and both teams appearing to be heading to a shootout, the rookie Eichel took a long pass from Evander Kane into the Hurricanes zone, and casually put the puck past goaltender Cam Ward. The RJ Cam captured the moment, and 73-year old’s call of the winning goal.
The outstretched arms and reaction of partner Rob Ray while he’s announcing the goal really shows how much fun that the Hockey Hall of Famer member has behind the mic. Check it out for yourself below.
