In Saturday’s matinee between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers, Wayne Simmonds found himself done with work early in the day. He was ejected 10-and-a-half minutes into the first period after punching an unsuspecting Ryan McDonagh in the head during a fracas.
The skirmish was started by McDonagh delivering a high cross check on Simmonds, who retaliated with a slash and then a gloved punch to the head that dropped McDonagh.
McDonagh left the game and did not return.
Simmonds was assessed a misconduct and a match penalty. McDonagh received a slashing and a high-sticking call.
After he simmered for a bit, Simmonds lost his cool, smashing his stick over the open bench door and throwing it across the ice in a move that will probably get a look for a potential suspension from the NHL.
Here’s the full play from the initial hit to the stick throw.
UPDATE:
Simmonds will not face suspension for the punch.
