The Buffalo Sabres were established in 1970, along with the Vancouver Canucks, when the league expanded to 14 teams. Brothers Seymour and Northrup Knox, whose grandfather founded Woolworth’s department store, started the Sabres franchise. The team’s first game was played on Oct. 10, 1970, against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which they won 2-1. Although the Sabres have yet to win a Stanley Cup, they have qualified for the postseason 29 times and reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, once in 1975 and again in 1999.

Sabres Sign Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to 5-Year Deal

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that they have signed goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to a five-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $4.75 million. Luukkonen took a big step in his development last season and took over as the starting goaltender for the Sabres. After some uncertainty about his position with the club, Luukkonen emerged as their best option and played 54 games for the club last season.
