Magnus Arvedson (born November 25, 1971) is a former Swedish ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks during the 2003-2004 season. Drafted 119th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Arvedson was a late bloomer in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), growing in theDivision-1 Swedish league with Örebro IK. In the 1993-94 season, he made his debut in the SHL as a 23-year-old and displayed enough confidence in four seasons to represent Sweden on multiple occasions internationally, before he was selected by the Senators.
Arvedson made his debut in the NHL in the 1997-98 season, appearing in 61 games and establishing himself as a good defensive forward. The following year, he was given a chance on the Senators second line and took full advantage by registering career-highs in goals (21) and points (47), while finishing second in Selke Trophy voting. Despite his regular season performances, Arvedson struggled during the postseason, failing to score a goal in his first four years while adding two assists. In his final two seasons with the Senators, he elevated his play during both the regular season and the playoffs, getting the monkey off his back by scoring twice in 2002 and once the following year. Following the conclusion of the 2002-03 season, he opted for a change of scenery by signing with the Canucks.
Despite a slow start in Vancouver, Arvedson saw success once he was added to Henrik and Daniel Sedin’s line, scoring eight goals and adding seven assists in short time. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by 41 games after a knee-on-knee hit took him out for the remainder of the season. While he attempted to make a comeback in Sweden in 2004, during the NHL lockout, a pre-season back injury forced Arvedson into retirement.
