Mike Blunden (born December 15, 1986) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators during the 2017-2018 season. Drafted 43rd overall by Chicago Blackhawks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Blunden joined Chicago’s minor-league affiliate in 2005-06 following his most productive season with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He made his NHL debut the following season, appearing in nine games with the Blackhawks and registering ten penalty minutes and a minus-5 rating. Unfortunately his season was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Blunden was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2009 for Adam Pineault, and appeared in 40 games during the 2009-10 season. He registered two goals and two assists along with 59 penalty minutes. While his offensive numbers were impressive at the junior and AHL levels, Blunden couldn’t translate it over to the NHL enough to hold onto a permanent role. He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for Ryan Russell in the summer of 2011, where he spent the next three seasons of his career. He appeared in just 51 games with the Canadiens during that span, spending the remainder of the time with the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Blunden spent two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, combining for three goals and five points in 22 games during that span. He moved on to the Senators, but spent most of his time with the Binghamton/Belleville Senators, serving as the team’s alternate captain the first year and as captain the following season. After 13 years in the NHL, Blunden departed to continue his career overseas, playing one year in Italy and one in Germany before announcing his retirement.
