Riley Armstrong (born November 8, 1984) is a former Canadian ice hockey player, having played his final year in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks during the 2008-2009 season. Undrafted at the NHL level, Armstrong played two seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a member of the Kootenay Ice and Everett Silvertips, increasing his production and total penalty minutes each year. After spending two years with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL), Armstrong moved on to the Worcester Sharks where he’d find immediate success.
In three seasons, his numbers continued to climb and his efforts earned him a two-game stint with the Sharks. In his debut, he recorded no points, two penalty minutes and a minus-1 rating. Armstrong’s return to Worcester resulted in his best statistical season to date, recording 42 points in 71 games. After signing with the Calgary Flames for the 2009-10 season, Armstrong’s role was reduced on a strong Abbotsford Heat team and led to his trade to the Detroit Red Wings. Armstrong finished the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins where he recorded five points in 17 games.
Following two games in the ECHL the next year, Armstrong flew to Europe to get some playing time in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). After scoring just one goal in nine games with Barys Astana, he switched leagues to the Deutsche Eishockey Liga to play 17 games with the Augsburger Panther. Armstrong bounced back and forth between Europe and North America, playing in Sweden and Germany’s second-tier leagues before finishing his career in the ECHL in the 2015-16 season.
